Why It’s Worth Paying Extra
We’ve all heard that organic is a good thing and that we should all be switching to this new fancy and very hip style of food. But do we really benefit? When you peruse the perimeter aisles at the supermarket and see two types of nearly identical fresh produce beside each other, you are going to look at the price and the fact is organic food continues to be a less cost-effective food. Though if you do have the spare change and the know-how, you may wish to swap out your regular cheap and cheerful stuff for the organic crops and here are the reasons why.
Organic food is made in a manner that uses combination of time old traditional ways of farming and pieces of modern technology to create a great yield with little outside interference. This means that the many mass-produced methods that have been created simply to cut costs and corners aren’t employed here. This means the soil stays useable and rich with nutrients, those in the surrounding areas aren’t at the risk of unwillingly being exposed to any farming products that work their way into the air or the water systems either. In fact, water in organic farming is often more efficient which means that places with hot climates aren’t throwing gallons of water away each month. It also means that the chemical products commonly used don’t end up in the atmosphere and continue to clog the air.
Animals Are Better Treated
If you do eat animal products it is far more moral to choose organic over conventional foods. Animals in organic farms have significantly more freedom, less stress, less health issues and as a result produce a superior end product. If you care about animal welfare you will know that the way mass produced meats are farmed is inhumane to say the least, but if the animal is treated poorly all of that works its way onto your plate. The health risks associated with poor animal care skyrockets when they are kept in overcrowded areas and aren’t capable of exercising, not to mention the increase of disease spreading. Organic meat is better for your mind and your stomach.
Chemicals are the main enemy when it comes to farming today. In the past huge companies like Monsanto have come under scrutiny because of how dangerous the chemicals they were distributing turned out to be, some of which were deadly. These powerful pesticides and growth enhancers aren’t what you want to be consuming but if you stick with conventional crops you are increasing your chances of being affected by these. Though it’s not accurate to say that organic foods are farmed completely chemical free, the ones they do use are notably safe and often used less frequently.
Probably one of the best reasons to go organic is simply to get the most out of your food. Most people don’t exactly eat veggies for fun and instead mentally tick off a checklist of nutritional benefits they are absorbing. The reality is however that conventional crops can have around 50% less nutritional value, this is before you cook the rest of it out. If you really want the best out of your fruit and vegetables, go organic.
